The Basque energy transition

The Basque energy model continues to make progress, in transition towards a more sustainable model based on the increased participation of renewable energy sources and reducing the use of oil products, replacing them with other cleaner energies such as natural gas natural.

A local commitment to the transition

The Ente Vasco de la Energía has created a new brand called Energiaren Bidea, which covers all the initiatives carried out from the Administration or in public-private partnerships that help towards the achievement of the targets set in the Energy Strategy for Euskadi by 2030, and in the task of making progress in the energy transition.

The Basque energy system has been evolving for 35 years, in which coal has been ruled out for energy use, and the participation of oil products has been reduced by 20 per cent.

In this context, the work done by local authorities is essential, as it drives efficiency and the use of renewables in everyday life. With the local version of Energiaren Bidea/Euskal Energia Trantsizioa Udalean ere, throughout 2018 the work of municipal councils and their initiatives to improve the energy situation has been highlighted and recognised. These take the form of biomass, geothermal energy, cogeneration, solar panels and major investments in energy efficiency through street lighting, transport and projects for improving energy use in industrial estates.
